Longer Wait Times, Renovations, and Masking Rules at West Nipissing General Hospital
Masking rules amid stomach flu outbreak and extended wait times spark public frustration.
The West Nipissing General Hospital (WNGH) has issued a series of announcements to the community as it grapples with a challenging start to 2025.
Longer Wait Times
In a statement, WNGH advised that the Emergency Department is experiencing higher-than-usual patient volumes, resulting in extended wait times. The hospital urged patients to seek care from their primary care providers when possible, emphasizing the importance of patience and kindness during this period.
Renovation Plans Impact Emergency Department
As part of the ongoing “Sprinkler Project”, WNGH has announced a temporary relocation of its Emergency Department. Starting today until early to mid-March, emergency services will operate out of the hospital’s Operating Room.
The hospital stated that these renovations would not affect emergency services but acknowledged they might lead to longer wait times.
Mandatory Masking Sparks Debate
On Thursday, the hospital confirmed a gastroenteric outbreak in its Nursing Care Unit (NCU) and Complex Continuing Care (CCC) unit. Commonly known as a stomach flu, gastroenteric outbreaks are characterized by symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
In response, WNGH introduced mandatory masking in all patient-facing areas and additional personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in the affected rooms.
The announcement has sparked controversy on social media. The hospital’s post about the new PPE and masking rules has garnered hundreds of comments and shares, with many expressing frustration over the return to stricter measures.
Several commenters criticized the hospital for imposing measures they deem unnecessary for a common illness like the stomach flu, arguing that traditional practices such as handwashing were previously sufficient. Others voiced concerns about the perceived fear-driven approach to healthcare, suggesting that the masking rules increase discomfort for already suffering patients.
