Low-Speed Vehicle Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest in Sturgeon Falls
Second LSV Driver Charged by OPP in West Nipissing This January.
On January 25th, 2025, the West Nipissing detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on William Street, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old individual from Nipissing First Nation. The driver, who was operating a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV), was charged with operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code. The driver’s vehicle appears to have been impounded by police.
The incident underscores the ongoing enforcement of regulations under Ontario's LSV pilot program, which began in 2017. This program allows municipalities to pass by-laws permitting LSVs on roads with speed limits up to 50 km/h, provided these vehicles meet specific federal motor vehicle standards. Operators of LSV are required to have a full G licence and carry a minimum of $5M in liability insurance.
This is the second time an LSV driver has been charged so far this year in West Nipissing. On January 10th, the OPP charged another driver after conducting a traffic stop on Queen Street.
Residents or potential LSV users in West Nipissing and other participating municipalities are advised to check local by-laws before operating these vehicles. For more information on the LSV pilot program, visit www.ontario.ca/page/low-speed-vehicle-pilot-program.
The OPP continues to monitor and enforce compliance to ensure road safety within the community, emphasizing the importance of understanding and adhering to the legal stipulations surrounding LSV use.
