MP Marc Serré now shares office space with media partner

Longstanding business relationship now includes shared workspace.

Nickel-Belt MP Marc Serré has recently changed locations in Sturgeon Falls. The parliamentarian previously served local constituents from a shared building with Service Ontario on King Street.

Serré has now relocated down the street beside local newspaper, the Tribune. Patrons who have visited his new office recently will have noticed that he not only shares the building with the local newspaper but they literally share the same room.

This new arrangement will make it much easier to collaborate on stories that Serré would like to see in the local media. It will also allow him a first hand look at all the positive coverage that the Tribune offers for his office.

Most importantly it will streamline business transactions between the two offices. According to the MP’s annual office expenses, year after year, the Tribune is the biggest benefactor. In 2023, Marc Serré’s taxpayer funded office budget spent $8,000 on “advertisement” in the Tribune. He spends similar amounts every year over and above his campaigning budget, making him one of the biggest supporter of the local paper.

Serré’s contribution to the Tribune doesn’t stop with his “advertising” and campaigning budget though. The Liberal government’s media support programs gave the Tribune $32,000 last year. The newspaper received $25,000 in 2023 as well. In fact, since the Liberals came to power in 2015, the Tribune has received nearly $300,000 from the federal government.

Earlier this year, the Liberal government pledged a further $58.8M to continue subsidizing local journalism until 2027.
