Municipality puts 3.8 acre downtown island up for sale
Minimum bid is set at $175,000 for land formerly known as Scout's Island
In May, West Nipissing council held a discussion on the future of a unique piece of property owned by the municipality. The 3.8 acre plot of land located between the upper Sturgeon river and holditch street downtown has not been used by the municipality in many years and staff requested direction on how to proceed.
CAO Jay Barbeau had told council back in May that the city was looking at a few different underused properties with the possibility of declaring them surplus.
Council heard the property in question was formerly used by a local scouts group but that the organization ceased operations a while ago.
The property has a building that was used as a clubhouse and is believed to have been constructed in 1975. In May, staff told council that the building would require approximately $72,000 of repairs to make the property usable for public use.
Council had discussed possibly turning this land into a public park or green space but ultimately chose to declare it surplus and put it for sale.
The tender documents indicate that the land is currently zoned R2 allowing someone to build a home or a duplex. The property including the building are being sold as is.
Bids are being accepted until November 22nd with a minimum price of $175,000. A site visit for prospective buyers is scheduled for November 14th, at 2 p.m.

Hi Rejean,
I'm the one who started a petition on this. Do you have any information about a First Nations burial ground and artifacts on the Island?
I will let you know if I find more information.
