Pierre Poilievre visits West Nipissing
Over 40 farmers come out to hear CPC leader's pitch to "axe" the carbon tax.
Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre made a surprise visit to West Nipissing yesterday. He visited the popular agricultural business Leisure Farms in Sturgeon Falls to meet local residents and particularly farmers.
His stop was part of a planned Northern Ontario tour that began earlier this week. Poilievre was also at an event in Sudbury last night.
Although this event was announced last minute, over 40 farmers showed up.
The Sturgeon Falls stop was the leader’s only one in the newly formed Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt electoral riding, which includes West Nipissing along with a vast territory that spans all the way to Manitoulin Island.
With the next federal elections less than 15 months away, the Conservatives don’t have a candidate for this riding. In 2021, Charles Humphrey finished second behind incumbent Marc Serré with an impressive 27% of the vote. However, earlier this year Humphrey announced he was not running again for the party.
Many polls and analysts predict that this region will finally turn blue in 2025. But first, they must choose a candidate to take on Serré.
So far, only one person has publicly entered the race to replace Humphrey in the Nickel Belt. Himal Hossain is seeking to become the CPC nominee for the region. On his Facebook page he states that he epitomizes cultural diversity.
No details on the the timeline for selecting the new candidate have been shared.
