Police prevent violent attempted bank robbery in Field
Series of violent incidents in small community keep the OPP busy in 2024.
Last Friday (June 21st) Nipissing West OPP arrested three individuals on Des Cedres Street in Field.
Keino Heath, 32, of Oshawa; David Newman, 27, of Caledon; and Roderick Newman, 32, of Cobourg were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, attempted robbery with violence, and possession of property obtained by crime. The accused were to set to have bail hearings today (June 25th).
Over the weekend, many in the area were shocked at the sight of a huge police presence in the small community once again. Some witnesses saw an OPP helicopter and members of the police SWAT team.
One witness told me that the incident happened at the Caisse Alliance branch in Field which is located on the corner of Grand Allée and Des Cedres (where the arrests occurred). One commenter on a since deleted Facebook post indicated that they saw four people arrested just outside the bank premises.
Police did not provide any indication of motive or explanation as to why four suspects from southern Ontario attempted a robbery in the small town.
The OPP have been busy in the West Nipissing outskirts lately.
In April, the OPP conducted a separate manhunt along highway 64 chasing four “dangerous suspects”. Police drones and the canine unit were used in that investigation which led to the arrest of four people from Toronto who were found hiding in a cabin.
They were charged with with trafficking cocaine and possession of property obtained by crime.
A month before that, the OPP were on scene of a murder in River Valley. On March 13th police responded to a shooting death on Bradley street and arrested one suspect.
