The 2024 Capital Budget allocated just over $1M to the West Nipissing Fire Services’ Fleet. So last week, the municipality declared two fire trucks as “surplus equipment” and put them up for sale.
They are now available for bid online. But unfortunately it appears taxpayers may only be able to recoup a small fraction of the cost of the new vehicles by selling our old ones.
With only three days left in the auction, the 37 foot fire truck with a 75 foot ladder is currently priced at only $7,100.
The city also has a 1997 Freightliner Water Truck up for grabs. That auction ends in nine days and is currently sitting at $4,550. The water truck has only 12,790km on it and 2,770 engine hours.
Both vehicles are listed as running and operating fine prior to be taken out of service last month.
With new fire trucks costing nearly $1M, the two being offered by West Nipissing represent an amazing opportunity for anyone looking for a second-hand model.
The vehicles are being sold through the online auction website GovDeals.com. West Nipissing is not alone in offering discounted machinery. The city of Timmins recently listed a 2004 Spartan Pumper that was taken out of service that year. That truck is currently offered at only $1,325 with only two days left on the auction.

What needs to happen is the sale of the entire fire department. Privatize it completely.
