Municipality receives $680k boost for 2025
Ontario funding going up over 10% to alleviate ratepayers.
West Nipissing was the recipient of some very good news last week when the provincial government announced their Fall Economic Statement.
West Nipissing relies heavily on provincial funding to balance its operating budget. Every year, the municipality receives the Ontario Municipal Partnership Funding (OMPF).
Last year the city received $6.5M which accounted for 20% of its $32.7M operating expenses.
But in a bid to help out municipalities a little further, the provincial government is boosting the OMPF for 2025. As a result West Nipissing will receive $7.1M or a $680,000 boost.
Budget deliberations are going to start soon and this sudden windfall should help allow council to better balance the budget. The starting $680,000 increase is equivalent to approximately 3.5% of the total West Nipissing taxation revenue.
In 2023 and 2024 council approved almost identical tax increases nearing 5% each. This was part of a trend since 2018 which has seen the average tax rate in West Nipissing rise by over 40%.
